Species: Lion (Panthera leo)
Location: Nairobi National Park, Kenya
A lion looks towards the newly constructed, elevated, Standard Gauge Railway. One of Kenya's largest infrastructure projects of recent time. This railway cuts right through the middle of Nairobi National Park and is among the latest in a series of infrastructure projects that have been gradually encroaching into the park.
Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world that is located within a capital city. Despite its proximity to the capital, it still supports numerous free-roaming wild animals including megafauna such as lion, leopad, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, eland, and zebra.
It is truly one of Kenya's unique natural gems, but it is under increasing pressure from the growing capital city. The long-term conservation of this unique national park will depend on the goodwill and determination of the government and local people.
