Species: Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus)
Location: Sio Port, Lake Victoria, Kenya
We were in a boat, slowly gliding along the edge of the reedbed, looking for Lake Victoria papyrus endemics.
It had been an exciting couple of hours but things were now quieting down and and we were heading back to shore when, all of a sudden, this little bittern emerged from the reeds literally three meters in front of us at eye level!
I quickly pulled up my camera and snapped three quick shots before it disappeared back into the reeds. It was gone almost as soon as it had appeared.
When I looked at my photos, I could not believe my luck. This was by far the best shot I had ever gotten of any bittern; those shy little herons of dense wetland vegetation.
