Location: Lake Baringo, Kenya
The lakes in the Kenyan Rift Valley have experienced significant rises in water levels in recent years. The exact reason for this is still not well known but the movements of tectonic plates is believed to be an important factor.
This water level rise has caused the death of thousands of trees in the woodland that fringes several of the lakes. These dead trees lose their leaves but often remain standing for years, resulting in scenes like the one in this photo. Other lakes with similar 'standing skeletons' include Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha.
