Species: Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus)
Location: Athi-Kapiti Plains, Kenya
We were surveying birds of prey on the Athi Plains when we came across these two cheetah brothers. They did not give us much time and soon slinked off into the long grass.
Unlike cheetahs in the Masai Mara and other tourist destinations, the ones of the Athi Plains are not comfortable around vehicles and move away when approached.
The Athi-Kapiti Plains were once believed to host the highest density of cheetahs in the world. Although there are still cheetahs there today, the size and status of the population is uncertain.
